Owners pick new name for Waveland movie theater

Owners John and Charlie Watzke have a new name for the old Waveland movie theater they’re revamping from top to bottom.

“We will be changing the name to The Beacon,” John Watzke told me this week.

The Watzke brothers, who used to live in Hancock County, bought the plush big seats and signage for the Waveland cinema from one by that name in Florida that had closed.

The Waveland Beacon will open this summer. Each of its four auditoriums will have a coastal Mississippi or New Orleans theme and all new digital projection equipment. One of the auditoriums will have tables and food service.

Now you know.

  1. This is great news! Waveland really needs something that will entertain the community. Besides restaurants. Thank you!

  2. Nice. Do we know if it will be first-run? Apologies if you’ve already said. I’ll go back and look. It would be nice not to have to pay $10 for a ticket, but I’d also hate to go back to the days of high school…when we got “new” movies two years after everybody else. I guess that’s why it only cost 50 cents to get in. Well, it WAS the ’50s.
