Main Street properties on the market

The family of the late businessman Harold Carver is selling their eight properties in the second block of Main Street, including the family home.

“The family – my mom, my sister and I – came to the decision that we wanted to downsize,” said Matthew Carver. “We wanted to be fair and we have offered each individual piece of property to the tenants themselves first. Some of them have decided to invest but others decided they don’t want to buy.”

The old Jerome’s Department Store was in the two large buildings on the facing corners of Main and Second streets where Magnolia Antiques and Social Chair are now located.

The row of small, colorful cottages behind Social Chair was called “Mr. Carver’s Neighborhood” in a newspaper article about Harold Carver’s Main Street investments. Matthew Carver said his father “started buying the properties in the ‘60s but didn’t decide to make them commercial into the ‘80s.”

At least three of the eight properties are on the market now, including 209 Main Street, which is listed at $235,000. The parking lot between Social Chair and The Buttercup is listed at $250,000. Shawn Pedersen of Wise Realty is the agent.

Carver said the family feels “a sense of sadness” in selling the properties but also relief. “My mom is an educator, my sister is a lab technician and I was a cop. None of us are real estate people. Dad was always the one who handled the repairs and the insurance. It was kind of thrust upon us and became a little overwhelming. So even though there are very fond memories there, we feel a sense of relief we won’t be responsible for it anymore.”

  1. I hope the charm of those properties is retained. Mr. Harold was a good neighbor.
