One of a kind

The older woman and her companion walking toward us on a Manhattan street were moving slowly. She was wearing some sort of hat, oversized glasses and a coat that didn’t seemed called for in the sunshine. She held the arm of the younger women for support.

As we got closer I looked directly into the older woman’s face and realized it was Elaine Stritch, the one-of-a-kind actress who did everything from Noel Coward on Broadway to Tina Fey comedy on TV’s 30 Rock. Her companion smiled at my moment of realization and we all kept walking. I’m sorry I didn’t say hello to her, just to hear that smoky voice. No telling what she might have said.

You probably saw that Elaine Stritch died yesterday at 89. There’s a great new documentary called “Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me” on Netflix.Take a look. What a dame she was.
