Bay-Waveland Yacht Club to host U.S. Sunfish championship

The Bay-Waveland Yacht Club is hosting the 2014 United States Sunfish North American Championship July 27-Aug. 2.

Officials expect to receive more than 70 entries for the international regatta, including former champions from Peru and Ecuador. They say there is a strong possibility that World, U.S. North American, Sunfish Class Midwinter, Sunfish International and U.S. Sunfish Masters, U.S. Women’s and Youth Champions will converge at the venue this weekend.

The Sunfish Midwinter Championship is considered to be the national championship of the Sunfish Class.

Seven youth races are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.The 11 adult races (11 of them) will be Wednesday to Aug. 2 with a formal closing banquet and awards presentation. Races begin at 1:30 p.m. each day.

“Bay-Waveland has a great sailing venue, a long history of hosting excellent sailing events and is home to many outstanding sailors,” said U.S. Sunfish Class President Rich Chapman of Libertyville, Ill. “I think there will be quite a few sailors both locally and from around the country who will be excited to come sail in this event.”

Anne Edwards, four-time women’s US North American Sunfish Champion, from BWYC, said, “The Sunfish is a great boat to sail and it has a high level of competition in all of its divisions.”
