Stream me up. I cut the cable!

A month and a half ago, I walked into the Mediacom office and turned in my cable box. “I’m breaking up with y’all” is how I put it.

Except for an untold amount of time after Katrina, I had had cable service for who knows how many years. But irritating outages, moronic network programs and cloying commercials wore me down. I was ready to move on.

Now I rely on my tablet and laptop and streaming device to watch TV shows, videos and movies. I read more, listen to music more often, and am generally less frustrated by not having to scroll through yards of channel listings and finding nothing to watch.

The few shows I did enjoy on cable are available on network websites. PBS has an amazing variety of quality shows (for free), and my list of things to watch on Netflix (8 bucks a month) is growing as long as my iPad Reading List. Of course iTunes and Google Play have new and old movies available any old time.

Local news? I read the Echo online and WLOX news broadcasts are streaming live on my tablet and laptop and with NO commercials or sports. Heaven! The AP mobile app is good for checking wire reports near and far. My digital New York Times subscription is a daily treat. It’s how I start each day and where I linger on weekends. Weather? No worries. I’ve got radar and animated lightning strikes at my fingertips, just like the TV Weather Readers.

appletvAnd I haven’t even cracked open that free week of Hulu Plus.

There may be a digital antenna in my future but for now I’m happily entertained and more than well informed.

Have you cut the cable?
