Show time: Will historic A&G Theater get new role?

By now you’ve seen the for-sale sign on the old A&G Theater. The owners, the Hayden family, want serious inquiries only, and they’ve gotten a few. They’re selling the building on North Beach and a couple of adjacent lots on State Street.

Here are some facts and figures on the historic building:

A&G opened April 1927. Seating capacity 1,000 people. Cost to build: $60,000-plus.

A&G named for owners Geraldine Ames and Philomene Gaspard. Two other theaters preceded it. The first, built in 1905, was an open “air dome.” Second theater across the street from the A&G was built by the two families in 1915.

1927 Sea Coast Echo headlines: “A&G Theater declared ‘thing of beauty and joy forever’ by public”
Sidebar: “New theater will have competent, regular organist”

A&G was stabilized in 2008 after Hurricane Katrina. The project won a restoration award in 2010.

Sale price for both tracts: $1.2 million

Spanish Mission-style theater has 4,800 square feet. Interior is clear, with cement floors, no interior walls and no utilities, but all utilities are available at the street.

The Hayden family said plans for use of the building by a new owner must be approved by the Bay St. Louis Historic Preservation Commission.
