Back to school? Already?

I feel sorry for kids now who have such a puny summer vacation.

The natural rhythm of a coastal summer rolling from Memorial Day to Labor Day was just the right amount of time for going to beach parties and picnics, bike riding, sleeping late and just hanging out.

By the time Labor Day loomed, you were appropriately tanned and tired of being home. It felt good to put on stiff new saddle oxfords and a familiar uniform and get back into the school year routine.

Over the last week there’s been a rush to cram in last minute summer fun before school opens.

Lucky us. We never had to worry about that when summer was three months long.

  1. how/when did it get shorter? Why? Are there actually more school days now? I’ve often wondered. In the north, they’re still not starting school until end of August and they have snow days to contend with.

  2. I’m with Ellis, when did this phenom wreck summer? Ages ago when I was a kid, we went through the end of May and did not return until the day after Labor Day…precisely as Lisa said…Memorial Day to Labor Day. Could it be built-in hurricane days? I know we never had a spring break way back then. Good Friday and Easter Monday. Mardi Gras Day, but that’s about it. A week and a few days at Christmas. I demand some answers!!! *LOLing just a little*
