Hit the trail: Possum Walk opening Wednesday in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY The 3.2-mile trail with the intriguing name of Possum Walk will open Wednesday at Infinity Science Center with a 4 p.m. reception followed by the ceremonial ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m at the trail’s starting point. Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise will be among the dignitaries who will speak at the ceremony.

The Possum Walk is named after an African-American community in the area near the historic logging community of Logtown. The new trail stretches from Infinity to a spot near the Pearl River. Markers along the way will give walkers some history notes about the area and info on native plants. Benches, a bridge, a floating dock and a kayak launch also are part of the trail.

The $785,000 trail project was funded by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources through a Coastal Impact Assistance Program. Possum Walk, also known as the Discovery Trail, is the beginning of a planned 100-mile Heritage Trail from Infinity to Moss Point.

  1. Must one walk like a possum to participate, I wonder? I am perfectly qualified to do so, let me say, having mastered the side-to-side rolling gait of the possum. Sounds like a great trail; however, August is not the time to traipse 6 miles (round trip) through the Hancock County woods. Maybe when it cools off. Betcha Mel will be out there tomorrow. Should we show up to heckle her?
