Road trip: Southern Food & Beverage Museum

1436554029623The Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans celebrates the food and drinks of Southern culture through photos, memorabilia, videos and exhibits, including the biggest Green Egg you’ll ever see.

On display are the best in food and drink from all the Southern states plus Washington, D.C. Representing Mississippi are Pass Christian’s Crystal Seas Oysters and The Shed in Jackson County, among others.

You’ll recognize loads of other items, from a case of Biloxi-born Barq’s bottles to Popeye’s chicken and sides. Look for the Katrina display case that shows off a plate of Heck of a Job Brownies and a can of Ray Nagin Mixed Nuts.

The museum opened in 2008 at the Riverwalk Marketplace and in 2014 moved to the former Dryades Street Market at 1504 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd. The large, open floor plan dedicates one side to the Museum of the American Cocktail collection and another to the restaurant Purloo.

We jumped the gun and had lunch at Domenica Restaurant in the Roosevelt Hotel. Prosciutto with tomato, fresh mozzarella and arugula pizza. Can you blame us?
