No storms for you, Weather Channel, as the Atlantic ‘goes quiet’

Attention, Weather Channel experts. Step away from the hurricane desk and tell Jim Cantore to settle down. Nothing’s happening. At least this week.

Jeff Masters of Weather Underground puts it this way in today’s blog: The Atlantic Goes Quiet. “The third week of August is when Atlantic hurricane activity traditionally takes a large upswing, but that will not be the case in 2013.”

The first hurricane usually arrives by Aug. 10, Masters said on wunderground.com.

“Still, I’m not willing to downgrade the seasonal forecasts for above-average activity yet, as we are still three weeks away from the usual Sept. 10 peak in activity, and the Atlantic is capable of getting very active in a hurry,” he said.

  1. Boy, those TWC folks are tugging at the leash, just dying to turn the tiny low pressure area into a tropical storm/hurricane. And the weekend rain in Gulfport/Biloxi and beyond goes to show you you don’t need a hurricane for coastal flooding. Settle down is right, Ms. Monti. I could pass another 10 years without a hurricane and die happy.
