BAY ST. LOUIS Looking for a good read? You know where to go: Bay Books on Main Street. Bookseller Jeremy Burke lists his top sellers in the month of August and they’re all local favorites with Coast connections:

1. The Man Called Brown Condor: The Forgotten History of an African-American Fighter Pilot by Thomas Simmons. This is the inspiring story of Gulfport’s John Robinson, a larger-than-life hero who made history.

What Love Can Do Recollected Stories of Slavery and Freedom in New Orleans and the Surrounding Area by Arthur Mitchell. The diary of a New Orleans slave that’s used in high school classes. Bay Books is one of the few stores to sell this self-published book.

3. Under Surge Under Siege by Ellis Anderson. Jeremy says this captivating Katrina book reads like a diary, from the day before the storm to three years later.

  1. I can vouch for Ellis’ book. Her venue was quite specific, but she recorded first HER storm story and then that of everyone who would talk to her and did it meticulously well.
