Oyster season begins!

Oyster season opened this morning at sunrise. If you squint, you can see about 20 boats off the beach at St. Charles.

The reefs in the western portion of the Mississippi Sound are open to tonging and dredging. The daily sack limit is 25 for dredgers and 15 for tongers.

Scientists at the Department of Marine Resources estimate about 80,000 sacks of oysters survived several “mortality events” in August in the western Sound. Officials set a harvest quota of no more than 28,000 sacks for this year’s oyster season.

Speaking of seafood, Cuz’s opening weekend looked like a big success, judging from the crowds inside and outside the new Beach Boulevard restaurant. Meanwhile, 200 North Beach celebrated its fifth anniversary with a great turnout Friday night as well.

Old Town was jumping with Jeeps on Sunday, and loads of Cruisers are here for the week’s activities. Look for classic cars in the driveways of vacation rentals all over town.
