Rain keeps oyster reefs closed

Some oyster reefs set to open today for commercial tonging are still closed because of last week’s heavy rain.

That includes Waveland and Stanislaus reefs, public reefs in the Bay between the U.S. 90 bridge and CSX railroad bridge and northern portions of the Pass Christian and Henderson Point reefs and Hornets reef.

Can’t wait to see those tongers at work again when the limited season finally opens. DMR says reefs will be open for commercial dredging beginning Oct. 14.

  1. Made me think of Daddy bringing home a sack at Thanksgiving and inviting us to “help” him with the shucking. Right…a dozen in the bowl, 1 in his mouth, 1 in any kiddie mouth that opened for it. I was the last one to try them raw, but once I did…whoa, Nellie!

    • First raw oyster I ever tasted when I was a kid probably came from the Stanislaus reef. An old uncle whose name I can’t spell would row his skiff out to the reef (not that far really) and then tong until he had a boat full before coming back to the beach at Washington Street. Hated that first oyster but that changed years later.
