It could get noisy.

NASA wants us to know that this afternoon at Stennis Space Center they will be firing up the Space Launch System’s core stage. We may be able to hear the rumbling, but it shouldn’t be loud enough to cause any damage. Really.

During today’s firing, which will last up eight minutes, the four rocket engines will produce a total of 1.6 million pounds of thrust. The last time the core stage was lit up, the test ended after about a minute.

NASA has set a two-hour test window that opens at 2 p.m. The public isn’t allowed on site to watch the test because of COVID, but live coverage will begin shortly before the hot fire on NASA Television and the agency’s website. If you feel the need, you can tune in to a briefing about two hours after the test ends.
